About the role
TRL (the UK's Transport Research Laboratory) is one of the largest and most comprehensive independent centres working in transport in the world and based in Wokingham, Berkshire. For 80 years, TRL has successfully delivered evidence-based and 'cutting-edge' research, technical consultancy and impartial advice providing its customers with value for money, competitive advantage and a better understanding of their unique transport infrastructure and transportation challenges. Our people work across all transport modes and in all areas of safety, infrastructure, transportation and product testing, including rail vehicle crashworthiness and occupant safety, all of which contributes to shaping and forming transport decisions and policy.
TRL is a valued provider of transport knowledge, innovative technology and technical expertise to the UK and European railway industry, working, in particular, upon a diverse and interesting portfolio of projects with the Department for Transport (DfT), Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB), Network Rail, Train Operating Companies (TOC's) as well as the European Commission and European Railways Agency (ERA) and increasingly, with many other railway organisations spanning the infrastructure and transport communities.

As our Rail business continues to grow, we are seeking to recruit up to four experienced rail professionals to play key roles in winning and delivering work within the railway sector with existing and new clients throughout the UK, Europe and increasingly, international arena. The roles require enthusiastic and accomplished professionals with proven experience of working in the rail sector, who can also apply their knowledge more broadly. This is an opportunity to join an expanding multi-modal business and at an exciting time for the transport sector.
Skills and Experience
Suitable candidates are sought from a variety of professional disciplines with knowledge and experience in any of the following, but not limited to:
- Railway systems
- Railway operations
- Railway asset management
- Railway safety
- Modal transfer and station interchanges
- Economic and financial appraisal
- Multi-disciplinary engineering and infrastructure
- Rail freight
- Degree or equivalent qualification
- Five years or more experience of working in the railway industry
In addition to the above, you will need to be able to demonstrate that you have the following:
- A broad appreciation of contemporary rail sector issues
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to adapt reporting style to client's requirements
- Creativity in identifying how client's technical needs can be resolved
- Excellent consultancy skills
- Self-motivation, being able to both lead and work as a member of a team
- Track record in working co-operatively, with a proven ability to manage internal and external stakeholders
