Positioning Vest Scheme
Those with postural difficulties often require assistance to maintain a position within vehicles that allows seat belts to work effectively. This certification scheme tests and examines the ability of such assistance devices to adequately maintain seated posture within vehicles. |

Positioning vests improve the comfort and fit of the diagonal part of a vehicle's three-point seat belt (typically for people with postural disabilities). They help to position and maintain the seat belt on the centre of the shoulder and across the centre of the chest. The vehicle's three-point seat belt remains the main form of restraint; however, a positioning vest can interact with the seat belt and the user in an important way and can potentially have either favourable or unfavourable consequences depending on its design.
While seat belts must meet the requirements of UK and European legislation, there are no legislative test procedures or performance requirements for positioning vests. This scheme uses a sled-based test procedure with requirements intended to evaluate the performance of positioning vests in front impact. It is based largely on UNECE Regulation 44 as this regulation is used to assess another after-market vehicle accessory (Child Restraint Systems). While a positioning vest is not a restraint system, this regulation includes a test seat and impact test conditions that are appropriate to evaluate the performance of positioning vests.
