Eco-driving & Fleet Efficiency

Understanding the environmental impacts of vehicles is vital to the development of sustainable transport systems. Technological innovations, alternative fuels and behavioural change are key interventions that contribute to the reduction of the environmental impact of vehicles over their life cycle.

Eco-driving & Fleet Efficiency

Eco-driving and fleet efficiency management are designed to change the behaviour of individual drivers and the car culture of organisations. Eco-driving can lead to cost savings, better road safety, and reduced air and noise pollution through awareness of speed, deceleration, gear shift timing and tyre pressure.

Fleet efficiency management incorporates a range of measures, such as vehicle procurement policy, monitoring of fuel consumption, maintenance regimes, alternative fuels, driver training and business travel planning.

TRL can advise clients on transport strategies for policy decision-making and corporate responsibility. We've provided information for clients to achieve reductions in the impacts of vehicles, including a mass balance of the UK motor industry, reviews of the trade-offs of vehicle interventions, the government's former Fleet Best Practice programmes and SAFED driver simulation. We conduct driving behavioural studies using our specialist driver simulators and test track and road system on-site at our head office in Crowthorne.

TRL also carries out research into Active Traffic Management systems, which can lead to changes in driving style that have significant fuel economy and emission benefits. We've carried out appropriate assessments of the emission and air quality impacts of proposed Active Traffic Management schemes for motorways and regional areas. The Emissions section of this website provides more information on our expertise in the field of vehicle emissions monitoring and technology.

Our key capabilities in this area include:

  • advice, guidance and training
  • policy assessment
  • evaluation of the impact of interventions
  • vehicle emission measurement and modelling
  • fuel consumption and fuel efficiency, CO2 and carbon emissions
  • assessment of alternative fuels
  • development of driving cycles
  • research into driving characteristics
  • driver simulation and testing.
