Forensic Analysis of Components
Our experts are able to investigate and analyse many different vehicle components, using high quality equipment. This enables them to comment on the state of the component at the time of the incident, and to what extent this may have been a contributory factor. |

TRL has the capability to examine many types of components to determine their condition and cause of failure. Metallic components can be examined and photographed by microscope. Dismantling can be carried out where appropriate. Structural examination of metals can be performed although such examinations may also be subcontracted to accredited laboratories where necessary (particularly if chemical analysis or mechanical testing is required).
Larger items, such as whole vehicles, can be housed and examined under cover on the TRL site. Dynamic or impact testing of items or scenarios is possible using TRL's various impact test or research track facilities.
Light bulbs can be examined to determine their likely state of illumination at the time of a collision. Examination of such items by scanning electron microscopy can also be undertaken, where necessary.
Investigation can be undertaken on a range of vehicle components, including;
- Wheels & tyres
- Suspension & steering
- Brakes
- Air bags & pre-tensioners
- Light bulb filaments
- Seat belts
- Crash helmets
