International Development

TRL has a long history of transport research, organisation, management and application, both for the UK government and for many other governments throughout the developing world. Much of our work overseas has been undertaken on behalf of the Department for International Development (DFID), and for many years we've played a key role in disseminating the findings of DFID-funded transport research.

International Development

Our work, which is directed towards the special conditions (financial, social, institutional and environmental) associated with developing countries and emerging economies, covers the planning, design, construction and maintenance of roads and the safety, management and operation of vehicles using the road network, while exploring the socio-economic impacts on local beneficiaries.

Research Capability

TRL has been conducting research in the developing world for 50 years. Individual research, consultancy and technical assistance projects are pursued by a combination of long-term assignments, short-term visits and home-based research. Abroad, we work where possible with local research organisations or Ministries, regarding the development of local expertise as a vital part of our work to ensure solutions are sustainable and tailored to local circumstances.

TRL's international experts are available worldwide. Experienced and specialised teams are offered in road safety, transport planning, highway engineering, roads and the environment, social development and institutional strengthening.

TRL has a comprehensive portfolio of project experience in countries of tropical climatic and geographical conditions. For more information please click on the links below:
