Road Note 42

Date: 6/5/2008
Good road infrastructure is a key ingredient for national growth and prosperity and roads that are durable have distinct benefits as they:
- Reduce the delays to road users caused by maintenance
- Reduce the cost to the road authority of that maintenance
- Increase the sustainability of pavement construction
Road Note 42 was jointly commissioned by the Highways Agency, Quarry Products Association and Refined Bitumen Association. In a three year study, TRL has drawn together views on what is best practice (and conversely, what is not), by conducting a series of literature searches, industry workshops and direct discussions with key stakeholders, including the commissioning organisations.
The overall aim of the guide is to encourage everyone working in the asphalt industry to contribute to making pavements as durable as practicable. It contains general guidance not only on procedures for maximising durability, but also gives specific advice on design, materials and construction aspects.
As durability is generally regarded as the best long-term means of improving sustainability, the publication of Road Note 42 and its subsequent dissemination is seen as critical in helping to solve the big question facing the asphalt industry – “how can long-life be achieved?”
Road Note 42 “Best Practice Guide for Durability of Asphalt Pavements” will soon be available from TRL's website, to pre-order a copy please contact info@trl.co.uk.
