Transportation Research Board 92nd Annual Meeting

Date: 19/12/2012

The TRB Annual Meeting, one of the largest transport events in the calendar, features more than 4,000 presentations in over 750 sessions and workshops addressing topics of interest to all attendees-policy makers, administrators, practitioners, researchers, and representatives of government, industry, and academic institutions.

This year's theme for the TRB Annual Meeting is "Deploying Transportation Research - Doing Things Smarter, Better, Faster".

And taking part will be TRL's  Nicholas Taylor, Senior Consultant, Transportation, who will be presenting on DRUM (Dynamic Roadspace Utilisation Manager).

DRUM* is an innovative traffic management system for road works that is based not on rigid timetables but on real time traffic data. By comparing a live picture of traffic conditions with historical patterns, DRUM is able to determine optimal road works configurations, allowing lane closures to begin earlier and finish later when the conditions are right. This in turn helps to ensure traffic jams are reduced and enables the job to be completed more efficiently and cost effectively.

Although DRUM was originally developed for the UK market and has been successfully deployed on a number of schemes on the M25, M27, M11 and M61, it is anticipated that DRUM will only need some format translation for it to be enabled to process US historical flow data.

TRB runs in Washington D.C. between the 13th and 17th January 2013. For more information, please click here.

* DRUM was developed in collaboration with MTS, Mobile Traffic Solutions, based on work originally undertaken for Costain.
