TRL market survey

Date: 29/4/2013

TRL is currently conducting a market survey and trial to determine whether any practical and affordable systems have been or are being developed to protect cyclists who are positioned in the blind spots of heavy vehicles. This is particularly dangerous in urban environments when a heavy right hand drive vehicle is performing a left turn at a junction or is moving slowly in congested traffic.

We are particular interested in cooperative solutions in which

  • both the heavy vehicle and the cyclist(s) are equipped with suitable devices so that there is a positive identification between the cyclist and the vehicle and,
  • false alarms due to other infrastructure or sources of interference are minimised

We are not prescribing any particular approach to technology at this stage.  Factors of particular interest include the maturity of the solution;  the cost of equipment for both the vehicle and the cyclist and, measures to prevent cognitive overload on the vehicle driver.

Suitable respondents may be invited to take part in a short trial at TRL's test track in Crowthorne.  If you think you can contribute to this request for information, then please contact Dr Dave Tindall:
