Project
Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in Europe - Identifying Opportunities for the UK Highways Agency
Background
The Highways Agency has a stated aim to become more integrated within Europe and has a desire to be informed about ITS developments in Europe.
Objective
The project aimed to improve awareness within the Highways Agency of ITS activities in Europe and to identify opportunities for it to take part in activities in Europe, highlighting where the Agency could benefit most from these activities.
Methodology
TRL provided intelligence for the Highways Agency on ITS developments in Europe. The project summarised key information for decision-makers and practitioners on activities related to ITS in Europe, and covered four specific areas of key interest:
- Galileo (including location-based services)
- Standards (including data exchange and location referencing)
- European ITS research projects
- European Commission activities, particularly relating to policy.
The project ran from September 2005 to July 2007.
Outcome
The project provided the following services:
- a regular Newswire email service, delivered to the inbox of relevant Highways Agency staff, containing summaries of ITS developments in Europe; the Newswire is produced in conjunction with the ITS Radar project (see www.itsradar.co.uk)
- a website providing more detailed information and research on the key areas of interest (www.haeuwatchits.info)
- news information on future conferences, events and proposals for projects in which the Highways Agency may wish to be involved
- updates on the work of the Euro-Regional projects (STREETWISE and CENTRICO) in which the Highways Agency is involved
- factsheets providing more detail on specific topics or projects on an ad-hoc basis
- a final report to the Highways Agency containing a summary of the work and recommendations for further work, and bringing together all of the detailed information which is of long-term value.
This project has now been superseded by ITS Radar International.
