Evaluation of the Ambulance Mobile Data Terminal
Background
The Department for Transport is monitoring developments in mobile data terminals (MDTs) that provide route guidance and other task-related information to professional drivers. In particular, there's concern that the on-board units may present an injury hazard in the event of a crash and that drivers (particularly when vehicles have one operative) may become distracted by the device, presenting a road safety hazard.
Objective
To carry out a safety evaluation and provide recommendations to the system providers.
Methodology
- Full task-analysis of MDT operations.
- Evaluation of safety using a TRL safety checklist.
- Report to the Department for Transport and system providers with recommendations for design and operational improvements.
Outcome
Some improvements in documentation and operator instructions were made immediately. Further recommendations can be incorporated in future designs.
Other Applications
Task analysis and checklists can be rapidly applied to assess the safety of a broad range of in-vehicle information systems.
