Urban Traffic Management

TRL can provide a number of services to aid in the management of traffic and other road users, whether this is achieved by speed management techniques or the promotion and installation of facilities to improve passenger transport vehicles or pedal cycles.

Some of services we can provide include:

• Traffic calming schemes – This service can range from area wide feasibility studies to individual site schemes.  Our staff are experienced in the design of appropriate physical engineering measures such as road humps or width restrictions to the design of more innovative measures and psychological speed reduction measures ia the use of road markings and altering the visual landscape.
• Collision investigation - This can range from the investigation of a single problematic site to the development of a Local Safety Scheme programme from initial identification of sites and analysis including cost benefit analysis to the design of appropriate mitigation measures. 
• Junction design – This service includes the initial feasibility study and design of all forms of priority junctions including standard and mini-roundabouts.  In addition, junction entry treatments can be designed on existing problematic junctions or when there is a need to show motorists they are entering a residential area by the provision of a raised table or gateway features.  
• Infrastructure design – TRL has experience in the undertaking of feasibility studies and design of other highway schemes.  These include:

·         zebra crossings;

·         schemes to promote and accommodate and improve public transport;

·         schemes to improve accessibility for all groups of people, particularly for those presently disadvantaged in mobility terms;

·         schemes to improve pedestrian safety, accessibility and convenience;

·         schemes to promote cycling.  

• Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO) - TRL can offer a service in which new Traffic Regulation Orders can be written and the accompanying scheme designed.  This can range from the introduction of new waiting and parking restrictions, banned movements, restrictions, speed limits and other schemes that require a TRO.  In addition, we can perform a review of existing TRO’s and the accompanying on-street traffic management to ensure compliance between the two and that legal enforcement can take place. 
• Car park design and parking impact strategies – TRL have the staff who are experienced in the design of car park layouts.  All designs are performed in accordance with national and local standards and guidance and the capacity maximised to ensure high parking levels are achieved.  In addition, TRL can perform parking impact strategies for new developments to review the extent of existing parking and the likely impact of the development.  The findings of the exercise are presented in a formal report with associated drawings and parking stress tables.
