Helmet & Materials Testing

The Helmet and Materials Test Facility is a versatile and cost-effective facility which includes a unique drop tower in excess of 15.5 m tall. The tower is capable of accelerating objects by gravity up to around 17 m/s (63 km/h) in a guided or free-fall configuration. Impact performance can be assessed by precisely guiding test samples onto a variety of impact anvils.

Dynamic crush performance can also be assessed by impacting the energy-absorbing structures which are secured to the base. This facility also incorporates a test bench which can be configured for controlled loading of materials and complex geometries such as HANS devices.

The facility is ideal for development, research and homologation testing of helmets, to and beyond numerous helmet standards including;

  • FIA 8860 - Advanced Motorsports Helmet
  • UN ECE R22.05 - Motorcycle Helmet
  • EN 1078 - Pedal Cycle Helmets.

The facility is also suitable for the testing and development of energy-absorbing structures to include homologation testing for numerous motor sport regulations including:

  • FIA 8857 - Rollcage Padding
  • FIA 8858 - HANS System
  • FIA Headrest Materials
  • FIA Steering Column.

In all cases, the Helmet and Materials Test Facility is complemented by the analytical and technical expertise of TRL's experienced staff. TRL offers a totally confidential, comprehensive and impartial service, making the facility ideal for research and development purposes.

A full range of equipment and instrumentation supports the rig including:

  • data acquisition - 16 channels @ 100 kHz
  • high-speed photography
  • environmental-conditioning equipment
  • dynamic friction measurement
  • standard test headforms and anvils
  • tri-axial load cell (30 kN in three axes).

The equipment is very adaptable, making it ideal for novel research projects such as accident replication.
