Highways Agency Road Research Information System (HARRIS)

Customer

Highways Agency

Background

HARRIS1 is the result of 10 years research carried out by TRL on behalf of the Highways Agency looking into the collection of road surface condition data at traffic speed. HARRIS is equipped with data collection and processing equipment to undertake rapid, automatic surveys of the highway network.

Objective

To demonstrate the application of state-of-the-art technology to the assessment of pavement condition at traffic speed, by the development of HARRIS2.

Methodology

HARRIS2 employs high resolution systems for the measurement of road shape and visual condition. Pavement shape measurements are provided by a scanning laser measurement system that offers unparalleled capability for measurement of transverse unevenness, such as rutting and deformation. HARRIS2 also provides full colour uncompressed digital images from its line scan cameras and advanced lighting system over a 3.5m survey width at better than 2mm resolution day or night. Highly accurate location measurements are assured by the differential GPS system combined with a survey grade inertial measurement system.

Benefits

HARRIS2 is capable of carrying out surveys over the full range of conditions encountered on the network.
Operates at traffic speed
HARRIS2 is a compact vehicle
No traffic management required
Reduced need for hazardous and costly visual inspections
Collects high quality forward and downward video facing video of the road surface
Other Applications

Ensuring smooth running of motor racing circuits
Surveying airport runways
