Low Temperature Asphalt

One way for industry to achieve significant CO2 reductions is to improve energy efficiency in sector-specific manufacturing processes. The Carbon Trust has beenworking with a number of industry sectors, as part of its Industrial Energy Efficiency Accelerator (IEEA), to identify where savings can be made in each one.
Now as part of their Sustainability Breakthrough series, a one day event is being held at the National Motorcycle Museum on 20th June which will focus on Low Temperature Asphalt.
Low temperature asphalts (warm mix asphalt, half-warm mix asphalt and cold mix asphalt) are increasing used, but most of the current specifications are written around hot mix asphalt. TRL’s Dr Cliff Nicholls will be talking about a series of documents that have been drafted to cover these mixtures. The documents are modelled on the current European standards, the supporting national guidance documents and the Specification for Highway Works clauses. It is hoped that the availability of these documents will encourage greater use of low temperature asphalts until the standard specifications have been updated to explicitly incorporate these environmentally friendly materials.
