Review of experimental work on stiffened plates

This report reviews research on the behaviour of stiffened panels and plates when subjected to combinations of loading which were not fully used in the compilation of BS 5400 part 3 1982 (see IRRD 263232). A comparision of the derived data thus obtained with the relevant code recommendations in BS 5400 and in other codes are made. The comparisons are based on characteristic stresses, excluding safety factors, and critical comments are made regarding the degree of consistency between them and their ability to lead to efficient but safe designs. The following sections are included: a) materials production methods and tolerances (residual stresses and geometric imperfections); b) a discussion of the basis of strength calculations used; c) beams without longitudinal stiffeners; d) flanges and webs in longitudinally stiffened beams; e) transverse web stiffeners; f) diaphragms in box girders at supports. An extensive bibliography is also provided, and areas where the codes could be improved are recommended.
