an enquiry into a short term road safety campaign in schools

head teachers' and class teachers' views about a two week safety campaign in birmingham were assessed. schools in thebirmingham city area had been invited to participate in the campaign by carrying out road safety teaching programmesduring the two-week period of the campaign. the results indicated that the campaign was an effective way of encouraging head teachers to organise road safety teaching in their schools. the results also suggested that the classteachers had found the teaching materials and advice helpful that had been provided by the road safety officers and by trrl before and during the campaign. however some teachers felt that they had been given insufficient notice of the campaign to plan their teaching programme as thoroughly as they would have liked and some felt that two weeks was too short a time period to teach road safety effectively. the teachers' comments also showed that teachers would have liked more guidance to enable them to select teaching points relevant to the traffic hazards in their schools' catchment area.(a)
