children's understanding of words used in road safety literature

more information seemed to be needed on the extent to which children understood words in common use in publicity and education about road safety. a list of 286 words was made up from road safety texts and teaching materials and tested for comprehension among children within the age band 5 to 11. children who were in the age band 7 to 11 were also tested to see if they could read these words. one hundred and sixty six schools took part, from all over the country, and ten children were tested in each school. this report includes lists of words, showing the extent to which each was understood, and could be read by, children of these ages. it is hoped that they will be used by those concerned with teaching or the production of educational or publicity material about road safety for children.
