Exeter urban cycle route project - before and after study

The Exeter Urban Cycle Route is one of the large scale cycle projects supported by the Department of Transport (DOT). The six and a half kilometre route links the residential areas of Exwick and Wonford with the city centre and the Marsh Barton Trading Estate. The route includes a new cycle bridge. In this report, data is provided which compare levels of cycling in 1986 before construction of the route, with those since the route was opened in 1988. There has been an increase in numbers of cyclists, and the majority consider it to be safer than other routes. Suggestions for improvements were made: better segregation from pedestrians; widening; improved lighting; improved drainage.
