The Stockton cycle route after study (1986)

This report compares data obtained in October 1986, following the construction of a cycle (and pedestrian) route in Stockton in 1985, with data collected in 1984. Changes in cycle flows, in other transport modes and in attitudes towards cycling in general and towards the route in particular are examined. It was found that cycling volumes had reduced overall but there was a substantial diversion of cycle traffic to the route from nearby busy roads. According to those consulted, cyclists' use of the route was influenced by its physical condition. Weather also influenced use. Although cycle accidents increased in the cycle route catchment area in the 18 month 'after' period compared with the equivalent before period, the proportion of cycle accidents to all accidents declined significantly. The 'after' period also included two summers where it might be expected accidents would be higher. Three quarters of pedestrians interviewed on the route thought there should be more cycle/pedestrian routes. (A)
