Carplus annual survey of car clubs 2008/09

Car clubs – a form of neighbourhood car hire – offer an alternative to private car ownership. This report analyses the results of the 2008/09 annual survey conducted by Carplus – a national charity which supports the development of a national network of car clubs. The survey results show that car clubs have a significant effect on household car ownership. From 5924 respondents, 39% reported that they had reduced the number of cars in their household as a result of becoming a car club member, and around a quarter of respondents said that they would otherwise have purchased a vehicle. The results also indicate that car club members make less frequent car trips as a result of joining, and that they make considerably fewer journeys involving a car, lift, taxi or motorbike than the average person (16-23% of their journeys, as compared with 66%).
