Deregulation of buses in South Nottinghamshire


The effects of the 1985 Transport Act on bus services in South Nottingham are described in this review. Bus services, fares, and operating costs are documented both before, during and after deregulation. A calender of the main events leading up to and following deregulation is also provided. Chapters are given on the following topics: a) a summary of the main features of the study area such as population, employment, car ownership, methods of travel, and bus patronage; b) the quality of the bus services provided and the fares charged; c) details of bus service operators, the competition between them, and the regulation of this industry; d) a brief account of rail and taxi services in the study area; e) a discussion of the policies of local authorities and the effects of deregulation upon public expenditure; and f) conclusions.
