overall trends in the development of transport: 1980-1990

the principal purpose of this introductory paper is to provide a background for subsequent papers which discuss the role and nature of future airports; to do this effectively requires the ability to look more than ten years ahead and relate the worldwide demand for air transport at that time to overall transport needs then. this paper does not attempt so bold a task; it aims at no more than a broad examination of some of the factors which decide and define the scale and nature of present and future transport systems, some indication of present demands and how they are met - and the resource costs of doing so - with some tentative suggestions about future levels of activity.
