Pedal cycle use in Greater London

This report forms part of an investigation into pedal cycling by London residents based on data extracted from the 1981 Greater London Transportation Survey. It focusses specifically upon pedal cycle use. Initially pedal cycle use is described in terms of the length, speed and duration of cycle journeys and how many cycles are in use on any one day. The effects of age, sex and household composition on pedal cycle trip rates are illustrated by a number of tables followed by a discussion of the influence of socioeconomic characters such as employment and income, and vehicle ownership on cycling. In particular the impact of these factors on the distance cycled and time spent cycling is assessed. This is followed by a discussion of why pedal cycles are used and the proportion of all journeys for different purposes that are made by pedal cycles. A spatial dimension is introduced in the form of the traffic sectors of London before considering the time of day, week and year when cycle journeys are made. The effects of hilliness and distance from the centre of London on the amount of cycling are also discussed. The main findings are summarised in the final chapter.
