TRL - Creating the future of transport

Walking & Cycling

TRL provides a range of expertise to help clients increase the take-up of sustainable transport modes, including walking and cycling. We work with our clients to create street environments that are attractive, safe and inclusive and which provide for the needs of the most vulnerable road users.

Walking & Cycling

By developing environments that encourage walking and cycling we help to increase connectivity and accessibility within communities, as well as contributing towards the promotion of active travel for health benefits.

TRL has specialist capability in auditing and reviewing infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, helping to improve both existing infrastructure and ensuring that designs for new schemes incorporate the needs of these users. TRL and Transport for London co-developed the Pedestrian Environment Review System (PERS), an internationally recognised review methodology used to help target resources for improving walking access in Greater London and around the UK. We have a large team of experienced auditors who undertake on-site assessments and provide our clients with detailed recommendations, outline designs and indicative costs.

Our understanding of travel behaviour and the wider benefits of walking and cycling, including health, makes us well-placed to advise on the promotion of active travel. TRL assisted the development of Transport for London's 2007 CycleChallenge, a cycling-to-work campaign linked to the London stage of the Tour de France. We help clients develop comprehensive promotional packages to market walking, cycling and integrated transport campaigns.

TRL has internationally recognised expertise in road safety research, including pedestrian and cyclist safety. We conduct accident analysis, behavioural research and community consultation. More information on our specialist services in this field is located in the User Safety section of this website.
