TRL - Creating the future of transport

Green Travel

Understanding individuals' attitudes and travel behaviour is key to developing sustainable transport schemes that meet user needs and encourage modal shift. Our team includes staff with specialist experience in demand management, smarter choices, promoting more sustainable travel modes and understanding travel choices.

Green Travel

We have particular experience in a range of related topics:

Smarter Choices

TRL is currently evaluating the activities of the Sustainable Travel Demonstration Towns for the Department for Transport. We've examined the synergies between smarter choice measures and other transport policies for Transport for London and explored the potential for a major travel demand management strategy to be implemented during the 2012 Olympics.

Travel Plans

We help our clients successfully develop and implement travel plans which encourage their staff to travel sustainably. Through the use of staff travel surveys and route auditing, we're able to develop a plan that directly addresses staff needs. We advise on how to encourage uptake of such measures by staff through effective promotion and provide monitoring services to evaluate the impact of travel planning activities. TRL's own corporate travel planning initiatives indicate our commitment in this field.

Active Travel and Health

Rising concerns over poor health and increasing obesity have encouraged further co-ordination between the health and transport sectors and provided incentives for increased uptake of walking and cycling. TRL is working with Transport for London and other organisations to evaluate and promote the health benefits of active travel choices promoted through workplace travel plans.

Understanding the Travel Needs of Different Social Groups

TRL has been involved in evaluating the attitudes, behaviours and needs of different social groups. This has included: work on ensuring that Home Zones cater for those with impaired mobility; investigating the social exclusion and community severance impacts of major infrastructure projects; and undertaking equality impact assessments of particular policy proposals. Further information on the work we undertake in this area is available in the Social Impacts of Transport section of this website.
