TRL has developed:

• education materials aimed at both novice and more experienced drivers
• roadside training for children
• hazard awareness materials for drivers training for the learner driver theory test.

TRL has also undertaken numerous evaluations of road safety education interventions aimed at both adults and children. Evaluation is essential to establish whether interventions that have been implemented are effective at improving road user safety ,and to ensure they provide the evidence increasingly sought by road safety practitioners on what works.

TRL has examined evaluation techniques and written good practice guidelines for road safety practitioners. We offer independent evaluations of road safety education programmes for a range of clients.

Enforcement

We have in-depth knowledge of traffic law enforcement in both the UK and internationally and can apply this knowledge when considering the behaviours to be targeted, how to monitor and evaluate different enforcement methods, and what new technology might contribute. We can provide evidence on the extent to which changes in levels or methods of policing are likely to result in reduced numbers of casualties. Our experience also includes examination of current practice in the charging, prosecution and conviction of driving offences.

TRL has practical experience of evaluating technology for achieving driver behaviour modifications through enforcement. Recent work has included the practical demonstration of a European system for detection of close-following behaviour and the evaluation of its suitability for enforcement use in the UK. Other work has looked at technologies for rapid deployment of average-speed detection and enforcement systems, which are proven to achieve a high level of driver speed limit compliance.
