TRL - Creating the future of transport

Active Safety

TRL has pushed forward the boundaries of knowledge in vehicle safety, leading to a reduction in people killed or seriously injured. TRL is at the forefront of active safety, we contribute to the development of international standards and legislation, and our groundbreaking research into primary safety, the response of structures to dynamic impact, roadside restraint systems, human injury tolerance and modelling, crash test dummy development and evaluation of safety systems helps keep TRL at the leading edge of vehicle engineering.

Active Safety

Active safety continues to lead the development of new technology. TRL advises on what systems can be introduced to help prevent an accident occurring in the first instance (primary safety), in addition to the systems that can help save lives when a crash does occur (secondary safety).

Primary Safety

TRL works on a wide range of primary safety projects including Primary NCAP for the Department for Transport, striving to raise standards and improve consistency across vehicles, as well as exploring the detailed aspects of:

  • lighting
  • braking
  • handling
  • ergonomics (vision systems).

TRL has led the way in the research and development of systems such as anti-lock brakes (ABS) and brake assistance programs, designed to help drivers have additional control when braking in emergency situations. Technologies such as collision avoidance systems and traction control help ensure vehicles are capable of auto-correction in situations such as ice or temporary loss of control. TRL has extensively developed test systems and knowledge which contribute to the high-quality systems and refined technology we have on modern vehicles.

Secondary Safety

Secondary safety systems have been researched by TRL for many years, leading to the introduction of technology such as the seat belt and other restraint systems. When an accident or crash situation is going to happen, how can we help soften the blow and help reduce the number of serious injuries and fatalities in road, track or any other vehicle collision or impact?

TRL has been influential in the research, design and development of airbags (for drivers, passengers, pedestrians etc.) as well as seat belts and pre-tensioning systems, all carefully designed to work together in crash situations.

Why Come to TRL?

TRL has a robust, enviable reputation in the automotive and transport industry for working with clients such as the Department for Transport, the European Commission, vehicle and component manufacturers, and motor sport teams. Our work in this area is a true example of how our innovation, knowledge-led technology, research and consultancy really does save lives.

TRL's state-of-the-art facilities, including impact rigs, test track, private road network and modelling suites, mean that vehicle testing can be undertaken on-site by world-recognised experts in the field of vehicle safety and engineering.
