TRL has been at the forefront of research into road and rail user behaviour for many years, having carried out numerous projects investigating the factors that influence driver, rider and pedestrian behaviour and accident liability. These projects have covered a wide range of specific subject areas, such as child and adolescent road users, older road users, pedestrians, motorcyclists, novice drivers, speeders, drink-drivers, and drivers with impairments or disabilities. |

Our psychologists use complex models to better understand what can be done to influence road user behaviour. Our research on adolescents, for example, has mapped out their attitudes to various unsafe behaviours and identified how we might best target education and publicity.
Our researchers have been involved in a number of key research projects investigating driver training and testing. They explore how driver behaviour can be influenced through training, attitude change and other mechanisms, and examine the prospects for influencing safety-related driver behaviours.
We have long experience in designing questionnaires that measure drivers' attitudes, behaviour, exposure and road safety knowledge - questionnaires that have been used in a variety of research projects. Experience in carrying out a number of observational surveys gives us an understanding of the potential problems in roadside surveys and the relevant health and safety issues. We also have considerable experience in many quantitative and qualitative research methods, particularly the development, administration and management of both qualitative and quantitative surveys. In addition, we have a team of trained interviewers to carry out fieldwork.
