Operational Technology Support & Development of Network Tools

This is a wide-ranging programme of work to support the Highways Agency South East Region (and formerly East Region too) to ensure optimal availability and operation of roadside technology systems detecting traffic and controlling signals on the carriageway. TRL provides operational analysis, specialist tools, management and engineering expertise to better inform maintenance, action plans and monitoring of Controlled Motorways by direct contact with the Regional Control Centre (RCC) staff, Highways Agency departments, managing consultants and maintenance contractors.

In support to the RCC operations, TRL uses specialist tools and Highway Agency data sources to conduct daily monitoring of signal settings and analyse their settings against traffic flows. Any discrepancies are highlighted to the Lead Engineer (the TSSE) in the RCC, thereby aiding the Highways Agency to maintain the journey time reliability and safety targets. TRL also provides consultancy support to the design and development of further rollout of Controlled Motorways along the M25 and M20, conducts investigations and formulates responses to the Highways Agency Information Line (HAIL) enquiries received by the Highways Agency.
