Roadworks
Based around a multi-disciplinary service model, TRL provides a range of consultancy services to enhance the design and execution of roadworks on behalf of private and government clients. |

This includes:
- optimal design of traffic management
- modelling of traffic flows
- site visits and inspections
- roadworker safety.
Extensive interaction with the Highways Agency has led to the development of a quantitative risk assessment framework known as the Temporary Barrier Decision Tool that provides a definitive measure of the need for using temporary safety barriers (e.g. concrete or steel) to protect roadworkers at major roadworks sites.
Through the application of our core research programme, convention-defying design innovations have been brought from the laboratory to the live network. For example, TRL devised the advanced cone taper design which reduces the number of cones required at roadworks, reducing the overall risk of harm to traffic management work crews.
TRL has a world-class record of conducting trials and certification for newly emerging systems and technology, including those designed to monitor and influence traffic passing through roadworks. By combining scientific disciplines such as assessment of human factors and road user risk management into our pivotal work programmes, we can provide the bigger picture for any roadworks initiative from start to finish.
