Traffic Management
Traffic management schemes are used to improve the effective flow and capacity for both rural and urban areas. A range of techniques are available to reduce congestion and increase throughput on our roads. How these techniques can be combined to provide demonstrable improvement is a key issue. |

A variety of methods can be deployed, depending on overall aims in terms of speed and safety, the type of road and the required output.
Traffic management can make use of automatic systems and human intervention to increase traffic flow and improve the safety of all road users.
The Traffic Management Act was introduced in 2004 to tackle congestion and disruption on the road network. The Act places a duty on local traffic authorities to ensure the expeditious movement of traffic on their road network and the networks of surrounding authorities. The Act gives authorities additional tools to better manage parking policies, moving traffic enforcement and the co-ordination of streetworks.
More information on our work on traffic management can be found within the Managing Motorways section of this website.
