Network Tools
TRL's network management tools capability has been developed over many years of research into real-time network modelling and development of decision-support tools. TRL's continuous traffic assignment model (CONTRAM) is used for predicting real-time network demand, providing the core to the Motorway On-line Advisor (MOLA) which forecasts the potential results of alternative traffic management strategies in the event of an incident or congestion on a road network. The system is currently being trialled in Kent. |

A further development of MOLA is NASSMOLA (Network ATM Supervisory Subsystem Motorway On-line Advisor) which provides a pre-emptive control system for the Active Traffic Management (ATM) system. NASSMOLA takes real-time data feeds from around the road network and predicts the likely impact on the M42 Active Traffic Management section. The system is aimed at predicting congestion on the ATM section and modelling potential solutions to avoid/diminish that congestion. The system is undergoing shadow testing in the West Midlands Regional Control Centre. It can also deal with the effects of incidents outside the core ATM section.
The development of bespoke real-time network management tools is also undertaken, covering a wide variety of applications for both urban and inter-urban networks.
