Dr Ian McCrae 1964 - 2010

Date: 16/2/2010
Dr Ian McCrae was an internationally-respected air quality scientist and a dedicated, inspirational and highly-valued member of TRL. His sudden death on Friday 12th February was a huge shock and is a time of immense sadness to all his many friends and colleagues at TRL. He will be greatly missed.
Ian had worked in environmental research for over twenty years, and contributed greatly to the understanding of emissions from transport and links with air quality. He acted in an advisory capacity to a number of UK local authorities and government departments on emissions, air pollution monitoring and modelling. Most recently, he gave evidence to the Environmental Audit Committee which has been set up to assess whether the Government is developing an effective strategy for meeting its obligations under the EU Air Quality Directives.
Throughout his time at TRL, Ian participated in a vast number of projects, including a number of major projects for the EU and UK Government and since 1988 had co-authored over 100 reports.
Ian was also a member of many professional organisations and served on industry committees.
Dr Sue Sharland, TRL's Chief Executive said: "Ian's death has come as a great shock to us all and particularly those who worked closely with him. Our thoughts are with his partner and his two small children at this difficult time. We are aware that many of his friends and colleagues would like to pay their respects and for that reason, we have set up a memorial page where messages of tribute can be left." These will then conveyed to his family.
Ian's funeral took place on Monday 1 March.
