Low Carbon Transport: Post Copenhagen

Date: 29/1/2010
A busy month has ensued post Copenhagen for TRL's Holger Dalkmann, starting with the Transportation Research Board (TRB) in Washington.
In a session entitled "How to Achieve a Global Low-Carton Transport System by 2050", the meeting looked at a study conducted by the Institute for Transportation Policy Studies (ITPS) entitled "Transport in a low carbon Society". The report takes a back-casting approach to identify pathways to reduce CO2 emission from the transport sector by 50% compared to the total level of emissions in 2000. It includes bold policy recommendations to achieve this goal.
Collectively informing this major global study were a series of regional studies: Holger authored the European contribution and presented on the key approaches to mitigating emissions from the area.
The next day, Holger delivered the keynote speech at an all day event looking into possible next steps after Copenhagen. Entitled "A new policy agenda on mitigating climate change in the transport sector in developing countries and steps ahead", Holger also launched a new paper by the Bridging the Gap Initiative which looked at the outcomes of Copenhagen and what is to follow.
In the afternoon, TRL's Ko Sakamoto helped facilitate a breakout session on the mitigation potential in the transport sector.
Following an invitation from the German Environmental Ministry, it was off to Berlin for Holger and an Expert Meeting: Sustainable Development in the Transport Sector Worldwide. Holger spoke on what Europe can do to contribute to a sustainable, worldwide development in transport.
