TRL charging forward with electric vehicles research

Date: 12/7/2011

TRL has been awarded funding by the Technology Strategy Board to undertake two feasibility studies relating to electric vehicles.

The first study will investigate the recycling of tracked electric vehicles Li-ion (Lithium-ion) batteries. This will explore potential processes for the cost-effective recycling of batteries from the propulsion of low and ultra low carbon vehicles, including detailed process flow and identification of the value of the recovered elements.

The second project will look into the potential development of commercial opportunities for using electric vehicle batteries after their primary use. This will include demonstrating how much energy remains at various stages, its suitability and estimated market demand, particularly for electric storage in the utilities sector.

TRL has a range of capabilities relating to low carbon and electric vehicles and these new projects are adding to this valuable portfolio. Our experience covers:

  • Safety of plug-in charging infrastructure
  • Inductive charging
  • Scenarios for EV take up
  • Consumer attitudes
  • Safety of EVs

TRL is also applying its existing knowledge of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) - distribution of traffic and modelling of network demand, sustainable transport planning, vehicle safety and driver training - to electric and low carbon vehicles. Using our expertise, TRL is able to develop focused, detail testing methodologies and independent assessment of technologies as well as, provide consultancy on holistic, sustainable transport.

The new projects are due to conclude in the Spring of 2012.
