Sustainable Cities
Sustainable development is of key importance in the urban environment. Urban planning must address the housing, employment, health, education and transportation needs of inhabitants, whilst ensuring access to services such as shopping and leisure facilities and providing for waste management. TRL is helping its clients in the drive to develop sustainable cities through sustainable urban planning and management. |

TRL provides expertise in energy use, traffic congestion, sustainable transport, pollution monitoring and resource management. We've developed specialist tools to help evaluate the resource efficiency and carbon footprint of entire urban areas.
TRL has internationally recognised expertise in network performance and traffic management techniques which contribute to reduced traffic congestion and improved journey time reliability in urban areas. This includes the development of efficient public transport systems and the design of streets which encourage walking and cycling. We have assessment capabilities to measure the resulting impacts on air quality and noise and can advise our clients on the development of action plans for the future.
Sustainable cities should also promote equality and inclusivity. TRL conducts research and consultancy to improve understanding of the social impacts of transport and we apply our knowledge to the design of urban environments that meet the needs of different users. We also undertake assessments of how urban policy and planning may disproportionately impact different social groups.
Further information on our work to address climate change and sustainable development within the urban environment can be found in the Energy and Climate Change and Sustainable Construction sections of this website. Alternatively, we have also provided access to the executive summary of the ‘City Blueprints for Sustainable Mobility’ project undertaken for Shell GameChanger. The project aims to identify pathways, plans and actions -potential “Blueprints” for the transport sector particularly in respect of increasing urbanisation, global mobility demand growth and the need to reduce transport sector emissions.
