Noise & Vibration
TRL's Noise and Vibration Group comprises a team of specialists with over 30 years experience in transport-generated noise and vibration research and consultancy. We have an international reputation for developing and evaluating noise mitigation measures and test methods which have been widely adopted throughout the world. |

These include novel road surfaces, noise barrier designs and new vehicle test methods. This work is facilitated by our participation in UK and international committees and working groups. We're also able to provide a wide range of noise and vibration monitoring services and assessment capabilities for tackling transport noise problems.
Our key capabilities in this area are:
- noise monitoring (including short-term, long-term, attended, stationary and mobile surveys)
- combined air pollution and noise monitoring
- ground-borne vibration surveys
- transport and environmental noise mapping and modelling
- development and assessment of noise action plans
- guidance on the implementation of standards and regulations
- guidance on scheme developments and planning assessments
- noise and vibration perception studies/social surveys
- development and assessment of standard test methods and prediction models
- development and assessment of national/international regulations, standards and policy guidance
- product design, certification and assessment.
The work undertaken by TRL in this field often requires specialist facilities and/or apparatus. The Noise and Vibration Group operates a range of systems, many of which have been custom-built to meet specific requirements and provide innovative solutions. These include:
TRITON
This is a purpose-built CPX (close proximity) tyre/road noise investigation vehicle used to measure noise generated by the interaction of vehicle tyres and road surfaces. It can be used for routine monitoring of the acoustic performance of road surfaces, and measurement data can be used to assess acoustic quality, homogeneity and durability. One of the benefits of using TRITON is that it provides greater detail than traditional static measurements and operates at traffic speeds with no disruption to other traffic.
Noise Barrier Test Facility
TRL's purpose-built outdoor test facility can be used for full-scale in-situ testing, in accordance with current CEN standards, assessments of near-field and far-field screening performance and assessments of the installation quality of different products.
