Public Transport
Who needs it? We all do! Convenient though the private car might appear, we see the effects of traffic congestion on our roads every day. Journeys take longer than they should; the quality of the air we breathe is degenerating; emergency services can't get through; and crossing the road is becoming difficult and dangerous. Public transport - whether by bus, tram, train or cab - can help overcome these problems and improve the sustainability of our way of life. |

There are times when most of us find some form of public transport useful: when we have a lot to carry; when we're very young or very old, or not very mobile; when we're in a hurry; or when we're travelling a long way or don't know the area. Sometimes, a normal scheduled service will do, and sometimes we need the service to be demand-responsive - travelling just when required to a specific destination. But even people who don't use public transport can reap the benefits because of the overall environmental, social and economic improvements that it can produce.
At TRL, we have experience of all modes of public transport and can approach them from the point of view of manufacturers, providers, operators, drivers and passengers, in urban and rural situations. Our public transport researchers bring a vibrant blend of experience and innovation, enthusiasm and competence to their work. In a multi-disciplinary research structure, specialist mathematical analysts and qualified project managers with long track records in public transport experimental design and high-level analysis work alongside programmers, statisticians, planners, economists, sociologists and fully-trained administrative and technical support staff.
