SCOOT achieves success in TRAFFEX 25th Anniversary Poll

Date: 11/4/2011
SCOOT has been voted the most transformative Network Management Tool of the last two and a half decades, by voters in the TRAFFEX 25th Anniversary Poll. Short listed from nominations by members of the transport community, SCOOT went on to take the top position. The award was announced at the close of the first day of this year's event, by Bill Butler, Event Director of TRAFFEX.
SCOOT has come a long way since its very first version and this was emphasized with an announcement at TRAFFEX of the launch of SCOOT MMX. Recent releases have incorporated many new features aimed at providing priority to public transport and in the last release (SCOOT MC3) new strategies to provide benefit to pedestrians at pedestrian crossings were included.
In this new version, SCOOT MMX the multi modal theme is continued with additional facilities to prioritise pedestrians at junctions as well as features to improve operation during low flow periods. Specific areas of functionality development include:
• Pedestrians: variable invitation to cross
• Cycle time sub-region independence
• Reduced cycle time at quiet times
Also honoured with a "significant contribution by an individual" award was Dennis Robertson, who originated the concept of SCOOT and TRANSYT, whilst working for TRRL, the Government owned predecessor to the present day, independent TRL*.
Gavin Jackman, Head of Traffic and Software said: "SCOOT has deservedly been recognized as a fantastic network management tool. It is a credit to TRL's Software team, and in particular Dave Bretherton and his colleagues, that SCOOT has gone from strength to strength, and is now recognized internationally as the network management tool of choice."
The SCOOT Urban Traffic Control system is now operating in over 250 cities and towns worldwide.
