Climate Change in the Transport Sector

Climate Change in the
|
Our International Climate Change Work
TRL is currently working to ensure transport is better integrated in the post 2010 climate change framework.
Policy Development and Implementation
It is imperative that climate change is considered in policy, from the international level down to the local.
Development of Lower Carbon Alternatives
Carbon emissions can be reduced by the development of lower carbon alternatives to existing products, such as electrically powered vehicles.
Encouraging Behavioural Change
People can be encouraged to make more sustainable choices by providing information, incentives, training, tools and support.
Carbon Measurement
To reduce carbon emissions we need to be able to establish suitable baselines, monitor emission levels and project the impact of different strategies and schemes on future emission levels.
Reviewing Standards and Specifications
Many existing standards and specifications were developed based on the current or historic climate.
Constructing Climate Resilient Infrastructure
In order to minimise disruption and cost the resilience of infrastructure and transport services to climate change needs to be increased.
Resilient Mobility
A TRL led initiative promoting policy and actions to increase the resilience of the transport sector to climate change impacts
Work is on-going in all these areas, but more action is required.
There can be a tendency to label climate change an "environmental issue" and assign action to a particular environmental team. However climate change impacts on almost every aspect of society. It is important that a joined up approach is implemented, with high level acknowledgments of the importance of climate change that is translated down to the ground and incorporated in all procedures and decisions across an organisation. At TRL we are working to incorporate climate change into all aspects of transport to ensure we create a positive future for the sector.
