TRL in Bangkok - Transport and Climate Change
October 1, 2009
Royal Princes Larn Luang Hotel, Bangkok
TRL is one of an international group of experts from transport institutes and research organisations, which includes GTZ, UITP and Veolia Transport, in running a "call for action" event, aimed at gaining increased recognition for the contribution the land transport sector can make in climate negotiations.
"Negotiating out of the Deadlock for Transport", will be held in parallel to the climate change negotiations already being held at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok. The event will put forward concrete suggestions for the inclusion of transport in the forthcoming Copenhagen agreement in December. These include:
- Explore the high mitigation potential in the transport sector
- Acknowledge the transport sector in the preamble of the negotiating text
- Support the development of transport related mitigation actions (NAMAs)
- Provide funding for transport related activities eg improving public transport
- Recognise the important role the design of cities has to play in efforts to adapt to climate change and tighten land use and planning policies to stop unnecessary urban sprawl
Developing solutions for sustainable, low-carbon transport is seen as an important step toward climate change mitigation. TRL's Holger Dalkmann, Programme Director, Transport and Climate Change, Centre for Sustainability, will be talking on Mitigation and Ko Sakamoto, Senior Consultant, Economics and Policy, on Finance.
This event is part of the "Bridging the Gap" initiative, which has conducted a series of workshops and side events as well as produce policy papers linked to the UNFCCC climate change negotiation process.
