The Second Rail Industry Research Strategy (RIRS2) acknowledges that Research is a key part of the process of developing the technologies that can reduce the cost of the railway and improve the competitiveness of the industry. A key conclusion is that strengthening research leadership is essential for driving fundamental improvements in the way research is organised in the rail industry.
