1st birthday celebrations for East London Transit

Date: 25/2/2011
An awarded-winning bus service is celebrating its first birthday, having carried 5.5 million passengers since its launch 12 months ago.According to Transport for London, the East London Transit project has been able to deliver a quicker and more enjoyable commuter experience for the people using it.
In addition, it has picked up two awards - the first prize in the Infrastructure category at last year's UK Bus Awards, while the rest area for the service's drivers at Dagenham Dock picked up the top accolade for Architectural Excellence from the Royal Institute of British Architects.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson noted that the project had got off to a "terrific" start - with bus use across this network increasing by ten per cent.
"Those living along the line from Ilford to Dagenham Dock are clearly enjoying the improved reliability and faster journeys that the transit offers, but that is just part of the story," he added.
The first phase of the service runs from Ilford to Dagenham Dock station via Barking town centre, while a second is expected to be constructed this year.
