2011 'could be the year the electric car takes off'

2011 'could be the year the electric car takes off'

Date: 15/12/2010

The UK is on the threshold of a "green revolution" as mass-market electric cars become a reality, the Transport Secretary has claimed.

Philip Hammond said "2011 could be remembered as the year the electric car took off", as he announced nine eco vehicles that will be eligible for government grants of up to £5,000 in the new year.

He stated low-emission models with mass-market appeal were a mere "pipe dream" just a few years ago, but now Britons can have the convenience of a car without the carbon output it would normally involve.

The public has demonstrated in the past it is willing to embrace new technology and make environmentally-friendly lifestyle changes, "so we could really be at the start of something big," Mr Hammond added.

Also commenting on the news, Chief Executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Paul Everitt noted the transition to low-carbon vehicles is an excellent opportunity for the car industry.
