£328 million in parking fines collected in UK

Date: 26/11/2009

UK drivers paid £328 million in parking fines last year, a figure three times higher than the amount raised with speed cameras, according to reports.

Parking fines are collected through municipal councils, which in turn use the money to bolster funds required.

Drivers’ Alliance and TaxPayers’ Alliance criticised the extensive fundraising by councils through parking fines.

Drivers’ Alliance chief executive Peter Roberts said: "The reports show that some local authorities are treating drivers unfairly and cashing in on parking fines."

The report also claimed an average of £85 per head was collected in parking fines in Kensington and Chelsea and the amount raised in fines was 16 per cent lower than last year's figure.
