£4.5m to improve Ealing Broadway Station

£4.5m to improve Ealing Broadway Station

Date: 23/10/2012

The congested transport interchange of Ealing Broadway could see improvement work starting in the spring of 2013 after funding has been confirmed.

A total of £4.5 million has been secured by Ealing Council in order to improve accessibility for those travelling by train and bus around Haven Green.

An interim solution will need to be put in place prior to the work, which will be followed by phased developments, reports The Ealing Gazette.

Since construction work on Crossrail is due to begin in 2015 it is important that improvements have begun before an increased number of passengers start to use the interchange.

The proposed changes to the station include creating a pedestrianised forecourt where the current car park is, widened paths by bus stops and enhanced lighting.

Matthew McMillan, Chief Executive of Ealing Broadway Business Improvement District, said: "Making the station entrance a better experience for people coming to the town centre is important and will attract the business we want.

"The visual experience makes all the difference to bringing the people here."

Extensive discussions have been carried out between the authorities, residents' associations, Friends of Haven Green and Save Ealing Centre over a period of two years in order to come up with the plans.

Will French, Chairman of Save Ealing Centre, said: "The station is key to getting a better town centre, it's absolutely been a priority, as well as improvements to Haven Green which has not been looked after to the extent it should be."

Funding for the project has come from Transport for London and St George, the developers behind Dickens Yard in Ealing Broadway.

The next stage is for the plans to be put up on the Ealing Council website in order for the public to peruse them and raise any points or objections.

This public consultation period is due to last until December 7th.
