90% of train services 'ran on time' in the last month, Network Rail says

Date: 18/2/2010
Almost 90 per cent of train services arrived on time in the last four weeks despite January's snowy conditions, according to figures released by Network Rail.During the four weeks from January 10 to February 6, 89.5 per cent of trains arrived on time, down slightly from 90.5 per cent in period 11 last year.
Five of the 19 operators' performances improved compared to the same period last year, and Virgin Trains saw a 6.1 per cent rise in punctuality standards from last year.
However, First Capital Connect's performance fell from 93 per cent to 85.5 per cent as icy conditions hit London last month.
Each of Britain's 24,000 train journeys made each day are measured for punctuality. Commuter services which arrive at their destination within five minutes of their stated arrival time are classed as being on time, and long-distance services are still on time if they reach their destination within ten minutes of their timetabled arrival.
Robin Gisby, director of operations and customer service at Network Rail, said train punctuality had recovered since the icy weather of last month, but warned "there is still room for improvement, especially on the long-distance and south east routes".
The figures follow a call from the London Assembly to the government to ensure the travel chaos seen during the worst of the icy conditions is not repeated.
