A drink driving conviction 'can affect career options'

Date: 2/12/2010
A drink driving conviction can make an individual virtually un-insurable and affect their career options, according to one expert.Neil Greig, Director of Policy and Research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), said many people do not realise how serious an offence it is.
He explained a convicted driver will have a minimum of a one-year ban, a fine of at least £500 and a criminal record that may affect future employment.
It could also make them "virtually un-insurable for up to seven years," as "some insurance companies just won't touch people with a drink driving offence," Mr Greig continued.
He stated the IAM's advice has always been to "avoid the temptation" of drinking driving at all, because operating a vehicle is a complex enough task when sober, let alone with alcohol in one's system.
Mr Greig was commenting on news the government has launched its latest drink driving campaign, which will reward those not consuming alcohol with free soft beverages.
