AA experiences 'busiest night for breakdowns in 25 years'

Date: 22/12/2009

The AA revealed it had its busiest night for breakdowns in 25 years yesterday, according to reports.

The breakdown service reported that by 08:00 today it had around 6,500 breakdowns pending, with a further 700 coming in every hour.

Local councils have been accused of failing to grit roads, resulting in difficult driving conditions on roads across the UK.

AA president Edmund King said: "Some key roads have not been gritted at all."

In Basingstoke, Reading and Berkshire, up to 2,000 motorists were trapped last night (December 21st) due to the weather conditions, with many cars abandoned.

Transport minister Sadiq Khan has said he will look into the situation and why local authorities had not applied grit on the roads to prevent the problems.
