Aberdeen traffic management scheme 'benefits lorries'

Date: 23/6/2011
Lorry drivers could find it is now easier to manoeuvre through Aberdeen, following the success of a new traffic management scheme. The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has welcomed the news that the City Council's re-phasing of two sets of traffic signs on Wellington Road junction at Altens Industrial Estate has helped operators of heavy trucks reduce their journey times.
Under the scheme, lorry drivers have "adequate" time during which to pass through while the green light is on, which has made their routes through the city smoother.
According to the RHA, as well as reducing the journey time for heavy vehicles by 19 per cent, the initiative has also helped to cut carbon emissions and lower operational costs.
Phil Flanders, RHA regional director for Scotland and Northern Ireland, says local authorities have an important role to play in the transport sector through the way they manage road infrastructure and that hauliers should get involved in these projects.
"That is the best way to ensure that councils properly understand the vital, positive contribution that lorries make to their local economy; and what they as councils can sensibly do to help hauliers serve the economy more effectively," he adds.
Drivers of heavy goods vehicles may want to keep the new Freight Transport Association code in mind when they are travelling through cities, as the guidelines have been designed to help improve road safety for cyclists.
